Module 12: Ethics and Technology in the School
Keeping students from exploring undesirable sites is often a continual concern for technology leaders and school administrators. The two major methods is through the implementation of a Acceptable Use Plan that can help enforce policies, and the use of filtering software.
In the Apply section, we'll take a look at the filters (and examine the AUPs in the reflection section). For now, browse this Yahoo page that lists some of the software and sites for Internet filtering to get an idea of the different prices and options available. Next, determine which of these software products might be appropriate for your site. Will you need software just for Web pages? What about news groups or Internet Relay Chat sites?
Make a preliminary selection based on the best match between your needs and the software's capabilities. Finally, keep track of this cost to update your Technology Use Plan's budget.
