Session 6: School Management and Technology
A Real-life Activity
Your apply section this week will be a little different than in the past. This week we want you to go into the community and talk technology with a principal. The information you obtain, along with the articles you read in the Connect section, will be the basis of your Reflection questions (see the Reflection section before conducting the interview).
Interview the principal at your school site or at another school (if that is easier or more appropriate for this activity). Identify the constraints, limitations, advantages, and problems the principal faces regarding:
- school technology needs
- computer managed instruction
- dispersing technology throughout the schools
- integrated software programs for school management.
In addition, discuss with the principal how he or she arrives at these decisions or grapples with these challenges.
Here are some possible questions you might ask the principal during the interview:
- How do you decide where technology is needed in your school?
- What vision--or long range plans--do you have for technology use at your school?
- What is the status of technology at your school at the present time?
- How do you prioritize school technology needs?
- How do you determine who manages and maintains your school technology?
- How do you decide how technology is distributed throughout your school?
- What is the extent of computer-based instruction in your school?
- How do you determine computer use, access and training?
- What integrated school management software programs are available at your school? How are these selected?
- What databases are available at your school? What are the main technology problems or challenges you face at your school? the advantages?
- What kinds of technology decisions do you make as school principal?
- Do you have a Technology Coordinator at your school? What tasks does he or she perform?
