Session 7 : Technology and Education

A problem facing all educational leaders is how to assist new teachers in applying technology to their job responsibilities. In this session, we will address this problem in three specific topic areas: developing integrated curriculum, training for instructional skills, and becoming aware of special education technologies.

The objectives of this session are to:

In recent years, there has been a movement toward integrating diverse curricula by means of programs and projects that cross traditional discipline boundaries. In this session, several approaches to curriculum integration will be discussed and specific examples will be provided that are relevant to new teachers. The Web offers the largest access to information sources of any medium. Such unlimited potential has direct bearing on the ability of teachers to integrate curriculum. A problem based approach to curriculum development assists teachers in designing activities that allow students to apply several disciplines to the inquiry. This approach has variations in such programs as service learning, environmental education and other efforts at combining subject areas.

One of the most exciting applications of technology today is in the area of teacher training. New teachers can be provided with exposure to a vast array of instructional techniques via the Web and software programs. New teachers can also be supported by interaction via technology with mentor teachers, curriculum experts, student teacher supervisors and like-minded colleagues.

Participants will be given the opportunity of reviewing these approaches and selecting an area of professional interest to pursue.
