Session 8: Establishing an Electronic Network
We are geeks no more. In this section we will be mulling over how to bring the human element into a LAN. In other words, once you've geeked out and put a LAN up, how do you motivate the teachers to learn about the computers!
First we're going to read an article and then do some day-dreaming about what the future may hold.
Exercise:
- Read "From Over the Internet" (Article #36 in your Hirschbuhl & Bishop text).
- After you read the article do some day dreaming about the future and then take a wild guess about what your network needs are going to be in the near- to medium-term. Will you need more speed? More connections? More workstations? More maintenance?
- Now here's the kicker: Think about what will happen once you have that new/upgraded network in place. How will you help teachers use it in their classrooms? Will you hold workshops to help them use the software? Will you give them computers to use at home? Free training at school? Will you use peer experts and peer training? How will they actually learn how to use it with their kids, for teaching and learning?
- Now post your dreams, and your thoughts, on how to make your dreams come true -- to the course Newsgroup.
- Read the other posts and then post any epiphanies you may have had as a result.
