Module 1: Overview of Technology in Education
Welcome
Welcome to Module 1 of EdTec 596: Technologies for School Decision Makers. Since you've gotten this far, it appears that you have an interest in how technologies can be used to augment learning, teaching, and management of schools. So do we, and we saw a need to structure a course that would be applicable to future school administrators and teachers who wanted to take more of a leadership role in their school's technological future. The purpose of the course is to provide you with relevant skills, knowledge, and experiences to help you take that leadership role.
In a previous, web-based course I had a student who dropped out after eight weeks. When I asked her why, she said "This was as hard as a real course." Although it wasn't meant as such, I took that as a compliment. Indeed, this is a graduate level course, and you will be expected to do graduate level work. Whether you are taking the course from here in San Diego, another state, or even another continent, be aware that high expectations will be maintained.
Throughout the semester you will be asked to engage in web-based activities, read web-based articles and hard bound books, create reports, and complete a major assignment pertaining to technology in your school (or a school in which you hope to be assigned). If you've not yet examined the topics page, you may want to take a look at the areas we will examine throughout the semester.
Each week we will ask you to begin a new module. Each module will be structured similarly to this one, in that it will contain five distinct parts (what we fondly call the ICARE system--Introduction, Connect, Apply, Reflect, and Extend).
Here is how the ICARE system works:
- The Introduction section will provide a brief overview of the module, describing the topics and what you should be able to do when you've completed the module.
- The Connect section will provide content in a context relevant to school leaders.
- Each Apply section will ask you to take some of the information you have just been exposed to, and complete an activity.
- In the Reflection section, we will ask you to analyze the ideas presented and synthesize an answer to a question. Your answers will often be posted to a Newsgroup for other students to consider.
- The Extend section will provide the opportunity to explore the module's topic in more detail.
Module 1
In this module, we will set the stage for the course by briefly acknowledging both the positive and negative sides of computers in schools, having you work with a teammate to research some of the responsibilities of school leaders in regards to using technology, and asking you to reflect on how you see your role in the school of the future.
We look forward to working with you over the next four months, and hope you emerge with a better understanding of how technologies can be used enhance our schools.
