WebQuest: Individualized Instruction

Introduction

There are good tutorials and better tutorials. Before we begin designing and developing our own, let's do a little critical analysis of some existing tutorials so we can imitate the best and ignore the rest.

Task

Your task is to work as a team to evaluate four past student tutorials from the list at the bottom of the Individualized Instruction assignment page and rank them according to the criteria listed under each role (see below). (Online section will use Breakout Area 1 or Breakout Area 2, as assigned). Take about 10 minutes to go through each tutorial by yourself or with a partner, and about 5 minutes after each to put your heads together as a team and report on an discuss your findings. After you've gone through and discussed all 4 tutorials, take 5 minutes to discuss and rank them. Make a list of the features that seemed to make your "winner" work. You may include features in any of your list that you wish to emulate in your own tutorial project. Report your findings briefly (5 minutes) to the rest of the class.

Roles

Instructional designer: How well will the target audience learn from this? Is the learning strategy appropriate? How fun and interesting is it?

Quizicist: How well do the test items work? Is it too easy? Too hard? Too many questions? Too few? Do they really test the stated outcomes?

Production manager: How well does it work from a technical standpoint? Buggy? Smooth?

Artist: How well do the visuals aid in the learning? How easy is it to read? Does the style match the learners?
