One thing that gets in the way of good problem solving is a lack of flexibility.
We tend to look at problems from a single perspective, whatever perspective
we've grown to be most at home in. A truly creative solution is more likely
to come about if we can break out of our comfort zone and look at things
another way. Or even 6 different ways.
Edward deBono, a prolific writer of books and
workshops about developing thinking skills, created the Six
Thinking Hats technique. It has proven to be a useful
way to broaden ones understanding of a problem situation.
Working in groups, identify a problem or decision that is personally important
to one of you. Throw it out there and, as a group, pick one problem to work
on. With the help of your partners, use this
worksheet to arrive
at some better insights into the problem. Blue Hatted Bernie will direct
you on when to change hats.
