Educational Podcasting

Podcasting is a very new phenomenon that builds on several technologies including RSS newsfeeds and MP3 audio compression. As with many new buzzwords, podcasting can be effectively used to enhance teaching and learning if the experience is carefully designed.     Meets 3/18 & 4/1     Schedule # 10872

 

Overview

This course is designed to be practical, current, interesting, empowering and thought-provoking. It is built around active learning and collaborative thinking. When we're done, you'll have created an educational podcast and developed insights that will enable you to design additional podcasts appropriate to your work.

Audience

This course is targeted at teachers at the K-12 and college levels as well as others involved in the training of adults. No prior experience with podcasting is needed.

Learning Outcomes

In this course you will learn how to

  • explain the attributes that make a podcast successful;
  • apply Keller's ARCS model to enhance the motivation of your listeners;
  • integrate elements of storytelling into a podcast script;
  • capture audio from multiple sources and edit it into a final soundtrack;
  • create an RSS feed for your podcast and disseminate it.

Course Outline

Session 1: March 18, 2006

Weeks-In-Between

  • Sample an episode or two of This American Life as inspiration.
  • Write a proposal for your first podcast and submit it to the class Moodle by March 25. In the week that follows, provide feedback to at least three of your classmates on their proposal.
  • Keep looking for interesting podcasts. Use the Discoveries forum on the Moodle to describe at least three interesting (to you) podcasts you've found.
  • Prepare your collaborators, script, music files so that you'll be ready to record your podcast during Session 2.
