Machinima for Learning

Using games (e.g., The Sims 2, World of Warcraft) and virtual environments (e.g. Second Life) to create animated movies. The course covers machinima as a tool for self-expression for middle and high school students, as a method for creating short instructional cartoons, and as a way to prototype a video production. Software purchase required.

Overview

This course is designed to be practical, current, interesting, empowering and thought-provoking. It is built around active participation and collaboration. When we're done, you'll have created an educational machinima and developed insights that will enable you to design additional films appropriate to your work.

Audience

This course is targeted at teachers at the K-12 and college levels as well as others involved in the training of adults. Some prior experience with Second Life and basic video editing is assumed.

Learning Outcomes

In this course you will learn how to

  • Describe the origins of machinima and the tools used to create it;
  • Analyze machinima and explain the design decisions required to use the medium effectively;
  • Choose an appropriate educational application of machinima;
  • Script and produce a short machinima film.
