Teaching Specialty: Systemic and multicultural/cross-cultural perspectives in consultation, intervention, program development and evaluation. Supervision of trainees and interns, professional development, and mentoring with culturally and linguistically diverse professionals.

CSP 680: Theory and Process of Consultation

CSP 680 focuses on theories, models, and practices of consultation in diverse school settings. Students learn models of mental health, behavioral and instructional consultation, among others, taught from a multicultural, ecological perspective. Recent research and innovations in multicultural and cross-cultural consultation are included. Students learn to consult and build collaborative relationships to promote and support changes in individuals, groups and/or systems. In this course, students will increase the success of children and youth by working with the adults in their lives. They engage in collaborative problem-solving and supervised consultation practice with teachers, educators and parents in local school districts. Reflection, analysis and feedback related to on-going consultation cases are part of the learning process throughout this course.

CSP 745: Program Development for Pupil Services: Program Development and Evaluation

CSP 745 supports the development of knowledge and skills to develop, design and evaluate programs and systems interventions in schools. Emphasis is given to methodologies for 1) school-based action research, 2) developing and evaluating systemic interventions, programs and support services, and 3) presenting program proposals, evaluations, and outcomes to key educational decision-makers. Students engage in supervised school-based projects and will share their findings with their host schools. The course promotes a collaborative context for learning and working with the host schools. CSP 745 is generally taken concurrent with CSP 752.

CSP 752: Seminar and Practicum in School Psychology

CSP 752 is a year long sequence typically taken during the second year of the SDSU School Psychology Program. Together, we meet for the seminar and group supervision, and trainees complete their practicum placement with an approved school psychology supervisor in a public school. The purposes of CSP 752 are 1) to broaden the trainee’s capacity to design and deliver a comprehensive model of school psychological services, and 2) to develop knowledge and skills in individual, group and systems assessment and intervention. Special focus is given to professional development in school psychology and collaborative problem-solving, with emphasis on skills in school consultation, assessment, advanced interventions, and program development and evaluation. Learning goals are developed for each trainee, consistent with the program’s Continuum of Field Experiences, Vision and Outcomes document, and the trainee’s previous experiences. Prior to CSP 752, trainees complete supervised school placements conducting ecological assessments, counseling, and other interventions.

CSP 730 Fieldwork in School Counseling

In this course, graduate students in school counseling further their knowledge and skills in school counseling through supervised fieldwork in public K-12 schools and through university seminars. School counseling graduate students work in an approved, supervised school counseling field setting at a particular level (elementary, middle and/or high school) as partial fulfillment of some of the field requirements for the California Pupil Services Credential with authorization in School Counseling. Over the course of the semester, students complete a wide range of school counseling activities and learn about a comprehensive role for service delivery. Students develop, demonstrate, and document a range of competencies in school counseling.

CSP 780 Internship in School Counseling

CSP 780 is the culminating field experience for graduate students in school counseling, and it supports the integration and continued development of knowledge and skills in school counseling. Students complete a supervised internship in public K-12 schools and meet regularly for the university seminar and supervision. Interns develop, demonstrate, and document the complete range of competencies for the California PPS school counseling credential. Seminar topics include professional preparation in school counseling and application of advanced theories and approaches.
