Academic domains

Narrative mediation and narrative therapy, family and divorce mediation, group work, multicultural counseling, social constructionism, multidisciplinary practice, discourse analysis, conflict analysis and conflict resolution

My core teaching focus is in the graduate Marriage and Family Therapy Program. At present I am involved in facilitating the first year block program in the MFT program where students learn about therapy in an experiental learning laboratory. I usually teach courses in multicultural and cross cultural counseling, group counseling and theories in marriage and family therapy.

Background

As a New Zealand native, I moved to San Diego from Hamilton, New Zealand in 2000 and have been a professor in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology ever since. Prior to moving to the U.S. I directed a counselor education program at the University of Waikato. I worked in NZ as a registered psychologist and family and community mediator over a 20 year period. In New Zealand I played a prominent role in the development and application of narrative approaches to counseling and mediation. I continue to develop narrative and constructionist methods in mediation, therapy and multicultural counseling contexts in North America and internationally. Today, in addition to my work as a professor in our department, I work as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, and mediate conflicts in the healthcare and couple divorce arena. I also conduct trainings in conflict resolution from a narrative perspective in Health Care and Collaborative Divorce.

Professional Interests

I most enjoy teaching in an experiential context. Unstructured group work lends itself well to exploring issues pertaining to cultural understandings of the self, personal and professional identity development and learning to work with conflict.

I continue to be interested in the development and application of a narrative metaphor in conflict resolution at both a local, national and international level. I have taught numerous workshops on this subject in the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Austria, Iceland, Mexico, Denmark, Estonia, Russia, and the United States. I was the fortunate recipient of the Fred J. Hansen Grant for Peace Studies in 2005 and led a conflict resolution team in facilitating bi-communal workshops with Turkish and Greek Cypriots in Nicosia, Cyprus.

I am actively involved in a range of professional domains utilizing conflict resolution and mediation approaches. I am a consultant in health care and work as a collaborative divorce specialist with Collaborative Family Law Group in San Diego. I am also a senior trainer with the Training Institute of the National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC) based in San Diego.
