The following course descriptions attempt to lend a discrete structure to a more fluid pedagogical process; a process that eschews rigidity, since each student cohort is encouraged to help create its own curriculum based on its perceived needs. The courses cover specific content within a dynamic process that is designed to respond to the needs and interests of diverse groups of students.

The learning community (CBB students and faculty) is given the responsibility to decide how we wish to master the material in each class. A professor can be in charge of organizing the content and process of a class, a group of students can take responsibility for organizing and presenting the material with the advise of a professor, or the community may design another option. The most important consideration is that this is material that students need to master and for which they will be held responsible on their comprehensive exams. It is also the faculty’s belief that graduates need to be familiar with this material in order to be competent as professionals.

CSP 600 & 600L Counseling Communication Skill
, serves as an introduction to the discipline of counseling, the concepts and processes underlying effective counseling practice and the micro-counseling skills used in the counseling process. This class serves as the foundation for the counseling & clinical skills training students will be receiving each year. In it students will be learning the basics of how to be an effective counselor. Counseling demonstrations both live (faculty demos) and on film or videotape (by recognized experts in the field) are usually part of this class.

CSP 660 Theories of Counseling covers the areas of individual counseling theories and counseling process models. This class typically deals with the importance of having a coherent theoretical model from which to operate as a counselor. It introduces the theoretical models most commonly used in the field and provides demonstrations (by faculty or by the use of videotapes) of techniques from these models.

CSP 670 Group Counseling covers the area of group counseling theories and techniques. Group process, theories of group interaction and group leadership topics are covered. Typically students learn about group process and theoretical techniques by a combination of reading, discussion and participation in exercises led by faculty.

CSP 740 Practicum in Individual Counseling is a two-semester sequence of supervised counseling experience. During the first semester, students have their first opportunity to apply the counseling skills and techniques they have been learning in CSP 600 and CSP 660. During the first six weeks of the class they practice their new skills with each other. At first they assume the roles of counselor, client and observer under the supervision of the faculty. After the first six weeks, they will continue to work under faculty supervision but now will be working with a client referred (or self-referred) to the Communicty Counseling Clinic.

CSP 741 Practicum in Group Counseling is a two-semester experience, for which students receive credit during the Spring semester. During both semesters students have opportunities to be members of one or more small groups, depending on the community’s decisions. They will also be expected to assume leadership of at least one group on two (or more) occasions. Students also frequently function as group leaders in their internships.
