Broadly speaking, my emphasis is on multi-cultural (especially bilingual, Latino, and African American) issues in the schools. More specifically, I specialize in ecosystemic approaches to nondiscriminatory assessment of and interventions in problem situations involving children's learning and behavior. I have a long-standing interest and specialization in ecosystemic and eco-behavioral interventions for children with emotional disturbance. This multicultural ecosystemic philosophy permeates my teaching; grant and program development; and publications, presentations, consultation, and involvement in professional associations.
I identify professionally as a school psychologist and my primary leadership and teaching responsibilities are in the School Psychology Program. I have taught a variety of courses in the department, although I am most often associated with our courses in ecosystemic assessment-intervention and advanced assessment-for-intervention. My primary role has evolved as a "creator of opportunities" -- developing and implementing 13 federally funded (total over $7 million) training grants to prepare school psychologists, counselors, speech-language therapists, and special educators to work toward educational equity in culturally and linguistically diverse public schools.
