MFT Program Admission Requirements
The admissions process is conducted once a year in the spring for summer/fall admission. The deadline for application is January 15 of each year. It includes a two-stage process: (1) submission of written application materials and (2) participation in an invited small group interview. The program seeks a diverse student body, including diversity in cultural background, age, gender, and life experience. Candidates are evaluated in four areas of readiness:
- Academic readiness: We assess for relevance of educational background, formal learning skills, and contextual/relational thinking ability.
- Interpersonal readiness: We assess for human relationship-building skills, such as psychological understanding, self-reflections, appropriate self-disclosure, and clear communication.
- Multicultural readiness: We assess for cross-cultural, multicultural knowledge, experience, and reflectivity about cross-cultural interaction.
- Professional readiness: We assess for sufficient familiarity and exposure to responsibilities and activities relevant to the MFT field.
- A completed application and the signed acknowledgement of program expectations.
- Evidence of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university or evidence of anticipated timely completion of an undergraduate program from an accredited college or university prior to fall admission. If accepted into the MFT program prior to completion of the Bachelors degree, the student must submit an official copy of the final undergraduate transcript to the Graduate Division of the university and to the MFT program in order to be fully admitted to the university and the program.
- An undergraduate GPA of at least 2.85 in the last 60 units taken. If post-baccalaureate credits have been taken, a post-baccalaureate GPA of at least 3.0 in all units taken.
- A personal statement, including a personal profile and professional goals. Applicants should see the actual application for a more complete description of the content addressed in the personal statement.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores.
- TOEFL scores, if applicable.
- A résumé.
- Participation in the group interview is by invitation of the MFT admissions committee.
- No additional materials need to be submitted for this part of the admissions process.
- Students are notified in mid-late March of their invitation status. The group interview is usually held in early-mid April.
Applicants are notified of admission decisions by the end of April.
Important! Submitting application materials:
Two separate applications must be filed for admission consideration.
- One application is required by the Graduate Division of SDSU. Applications are obtained directly from the Graduate Division on-line (http://gra.sdsu.edu/Graduate/admissions). The deadline for the SDSU Graduate Division application is January 15. Submit this application to the Graduate Division of the University on-line. Please consult the Bulletin of the Graduate Division for more information about admission to the Graduate Division of the University.
- A sealed, official copy of all transcripts and GRE scores must be submitted with the Graduate Division application.
- The second application is required by the MFT program in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology. Applications are available beginning in mid-October from the Department of Counseling and School Psychology office, North Education 179 and on this website. This application should be submitted directly to the Department of Counseling and School Psychology (the address is in the frame on the left side of this page). The deadline for the MFT program application is January 15 of each year for fall admission. Please click on MFT Application for further information.
- Unofficial copies of transcripts and GRE scores must be submitted with the MFT application.
- When making application to the MFT program, please submit all materials in a single packet. Materials that are sent in separate mailings have a high likelihood of getting lost. All letters of recommendation for the department should be in sealed, official envelopes and, along with unofficial transcripts of grades and GRE scores, should be enclosed with your admissions packet. No materials are returned to applicants or forwarded to other programs.
-
DO NOT SUBMIT APPLICATION MATERIALS ON-LINE OR VIA E-MAIL.
