Other Program Resources

The Center for Community Counseling. The department has a clinical training facility in the City Heights community of San Diego. All Practicum training is conducted at this location. The facility houses 12 therapy rooms with one-way mirrors for live supervision, a seminar room, a (future) clinical lab, three offices, and a waiting and reception area. Students provide individual, couple, and family therapy with community and campus populations.

The MFT Student Association. Under the leadership of students in the MFT program, the Student Association provides annual opportunities for student networking, further professional development, and exchange with faculty on program issues.

Support Groups. The program and department have begun to offer support groups to provide a forum to address the intersection of personal, cultural, and professional development issues.

Work and financial assistance while in the program

Some students work part-time while pursuing the program. Working full-time while completing course requirements in the first two years of the program is highly stressful, anxiety producing and not recommended. Most classes are scheduled in the late afternoon and evening and on some Saturdays. Students should anticipate needing to manage time and adjust other life commitments as they progress through the program, particularly to fulfill the clinical experience part of the program.

Students admitted to the program may seek financial support through need-based financial aid, college scholarships, merit-based awards, a few departmental Graduate Assistantships, and financial loans. International students may apply for an international tuition waiver for the first year of the program. Students should contact the Financial Aid Office for specific information. The Program will inform students of opportunities within the department upon admission. Unfortunately, opportunities vary from year to year, and students cannot be guaranteed departmental assistance prior to admission.

Department of Counseling and School Psychology
.
The MFT program is one of four programs located in the CSP Department. The three other programs include the School Counseling, School Psychology, and Community-Based Block programs. The mission of the department is to prepare counselors and school psychologists who provide culturally respectful services, grounded in leading edge ideas and practices within their respective fields, in mental health and educational settings. This mission is informed by our complex, multicultural, multilingual social environment reflected in both our faculty and student membership and a commitment to social responsibility. Under certain circumstances, students may pursue two programs in the department either sequentially or concurrently. Consult with program advisors for more information about this option.
