Comprehensive, independent, devoted entirely to graduate study, and a member of The Claremont Colleges consortium, Claremont Graduate University, located about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, is unique. Founded as The Claremont Graduate School in 1925, CGU has achieved a reputation for excellence in art, education, the humanities and the social sciences. Today, CGU's 2000 full and part-time students are enrolled in degree programs in nineteen different fields. Most of these programs lead to the Ph.D. degree.
The School of Educational Studies offers opportunities to pursue advanced work culminating in the doctor of philosophy and master of arts degrees, as well as the teaching credential and the professional administrative credential. Masters and doctoral programs in the Center are designed to offer students considerable freedom in shaping a curriculum suited to their particular needs. Interdisciplinary study is encouraged, and students may take some of their course work in academic fields outside of education. Today, more than 100 of the Center's graduates are professors in universities and colleges, and many are distinguishing themselves as college presidents and school superintendents.
