What are the qualifications for admission?
Candidates must have three years of full time employment in a position that requires a teaching, pupil personnel services, librarian, or school nurse credential. In addition, all students must have taken the CBEST and, if a master’s candidate, the GRE.
What do faculty look for in an application?
Faculty assess a candidate’s readiness to engage in this graduate study through the evaluation of several documents, including the letter of intent, letters of recommendation, review of summary evaluations and current levels of demonstrated leadership in the candidate’s current position.
What is the cost of the program and are their provisions for obtaining financial aid?
The best source for up to date information on fees is the SDSU Cashier's Office. Leadership candidates may be eligible for Financial aid through Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For more information on your eligibility contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships
How long does it take to process a loan application?
Financial aid may take several weeks to process; therefore, students should apply for financial aid as soon as possible after they apply for admission and are notified of acceptance. (however, only admitted students will be awarded aid). Students must reapply for financial aid each academic year.
Are GRE scores required for the program?
A minimum score of 950 is required for Master's Degree candidates only.
If applications are due by February 1, and I will not have completed three years of teaching until June, may I still apply to the program? Yes. Include a written note to that effect in your application packet and cite the date you will meet the three year requirement. If you are approved for admission, it will be contingent upon proof of verification of meeting this requirement.
Must I be employed in a full-time capacity in order to participate in the field experience component? Yes. Due to the structure of our field experience component, you will be required to identify a target group of students and work with a site advisory committee to develop an instructional improvement strategy for this population of students. This focused leadership role will necessitate ongoing contact and interaction with your target group, site stakeholders and your advisory committee.
Are admission requirements dependent on holding a clear teaching credential? Yes, all applicants must possess a clear California credential at the time of application.
How do I fulfill the three-day principal shadowing requirement if I teach full-time? This requirement can be met in several ways. You can choose to shadow a principal during the time your school may not be in session, e.g., spring/summer break, winter recess, etc. Also, some leadership candidates opt to use their personal leave days which their districts provide as part of the collective bargaining agreement. In either case, the three shadowing days must be consecutive.
