Digitizing a Music CD
  1. Start SoundEdit 16, located on the hard drive of all Macintosh computer stations in the IML. Double click on the SoundEdit 16 icon to open the application.

  2. Go to Control Panels, under the to ensure that the Sound Monitoring Source option is CD. See below.

  3. Open AppleCD Audio Player, by locating the AppleCD Audio Player icon on the hard drive and double clicking the mouse on the icon.

  4. Set sound levels. Put the CD into the computer and play the sound track using the play button in AppleCD Audio Player. While the music is playing, go back into SoundEdit 16 and set the sound levels in the Levels panel of SoundEdit 16. Make sure the Levels panel in SoundEdit 16 is visible (shown below). If it is not, go to Window menu, and then Levels, which will bring up the panel. The levels should peak at the number "0", with few levels in the red area. You can move the left and right levels together if you place the cursor arrow between the two indicators and press the mouse, moving them at the same time.

  5. Set the sound format. Go to the Modify menu, and then Sound format, and set the sampling rate to 22.050 kHz and the sampling resolution to 8 bit (with no compression). Click the OK button.

  6. Record the music. Make sure the Control panel in SoundEdit 16 is visible (shown below). If it is not, go to the Window menu, and then Controls, which will bring up the panel. Locate a point on the CD just before you want the recording to begin. Press the Play button in ApplieCD Audio Player. When ready to record, press the Record button on the Control panel of SoundEdit 16. When finished, push the Stop button.

  7. Save the file. Save the file to your disk by going to File, Save As. a) Type in file name, and b) Select File Format: Audio IFF (AIFF).

  8. Click Desktop (to save your file to the desktop). Insert your disk. Click desktop. Your disk should appear in the window to the left of the desktop button. Double click the icon in this window.
  9. Click Save. You now have an AIFF file that you can modify in SoundEdit 16.
  10. If recording an entire CD track, you can use the Convert CD Audio button in SoundEdit 16 instead of the AppleCD Audio Player:
