Steps in recording a live voice
- Start SoundEdit 16, located on the hard drive of all computer stations in the IML. Double click on the SoundEdit 16 icon to open the application.
- Go to Control Panels, under the
to ensure that the Sound Monitoring Source option is Sound In. See below.
- Set the levels. Make sure the Levels panel is visible in SoundEdit 16 (shown below). If it is not, go to the Window menu, and then Levels, which will bring up the panel. If you don't have a microphone, see a lab staff. Speak into the microphone. When speaking into the microphone, watch the levels indicator in SoundEdit 16. Your voice level should peak at the number "0", with few levels in the red area. You can move the left and right levels together if you place the cursor arrow between the two indicators and press the mouse, moving them at the same time.

- Set the sound format. Go to the Modify menu, and then Sound format, and set the sampling rate to 22.050 kHz and the sampling resolution to 8 bit (with no compression). Click the OK button.

- Record your voice. Make sure the Control panel in SoundEdit 16 is visible (shown below). If it is not, go to the Window menu, and then Controls, which will bring up the panel. When ready to record, press the Record button on the Control panel of SoundEdit 16 and speak into the microphone. When finished, push the Stop button.

- Save the file. Save the file to your disk by going to File, and then Save As. a) Type in file name, and b) Select File Format: Audio IFF (AIFF).

- Click Desktop (to save your file to the desktop). Insert your disk. Click desktop. Your disk should appear in the window to the left of the desktop button. Double click the icon in this window.
- Click Save. You now have an AIFF file that you can modify in SoundEdit 16.
