Indices and Hotlists for Educators

The following sites are good starting points for exploration. Each leads to a huge number of interesting and useful lessons, resources and activities for teachers, administrators, instructional designers, trainers, counselors and other educators.

General Education Indices

K-12 Sites for Specific Subjects

  • Language Arts: The Children's Literature Web Guide covers recommended books, movies, resources for parents and teachers, and research guides to children's literature. MCREL also has a good, more general Language Arts page. The S.C.O.R.E. Language Arts site includes CyberGuides for literature-centered lessons as well as links to many other resources.
  • Social Studies: The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) maintains an excellent list of resources organized by the ten major themes of social studies. The S.C.O.R.E. site has organized links so that you can search by theme or topic or by grade level. CSU Northridge professor Marty Levine has a very good list of lesson plans and resources as well.
  • Math & Science: The Explorer at the University of Kansas is a collection of educational resources (instructional software, lab activities, lesson plans, student created materials ...) for K-12 mathematics and science education. The Cornell Math and Science Gateway is another comprehensive site. California's S.C.O.R.E. sites for Math and Science include links to the state curriculum frameworks.
  • Foreign Language:The McREL page for language teachers lists dictionaries, linguistic resources and pages for languages from Latin to Klingon.
  • Art:Artsedge houses a great set of links for the art teacher. Better still, perhaps, is ArtsEdNet which is based at the Getty Museum. It includes a focus on ancient Greece and Rome that should be useful to social studies teachers.
  • Music:The Music Education Launch Site is a comprehensive starting point.

Search Engines

  • Alta Vista, for the moment, seems to be the best general purpose search engine. In addition to searching millions of web pages, Alta Vista allows you to find items mentioned in USENET newsgroups. You might also want to try Excite which is similarly comprehensive and sometimes more up to date. For both sites, be sure to check out the search tips and advanced search options available.
  • ERIC, of course, is the premier tool for finding paper-based articles, research reports and curricular materials. There is also a search tool for locating ERIC Digests, which are brief summaries of the literature on a given topic.
  • Yahoo's Education Links are a good starting point for any search for web pages.
  • The San Diego State University Library page has links to a variety of databases and bibliographic search tools, some of which are accessible to those not associated with SDSU.
  • The Specialized Search Engines page has a select list of useful tools.

News & Magazines

For current events, magazines and newspapers can get you information that is not indexed in the general search engines like Alta Vista.

  • Yahoo's Media and Magazine page can lead you to selected magazine articles online.
  • For links to newspapers, try the American Journalism Review's Newslinks site.
  • The CNN page is also searchable, and includes a separate media search engine for movies, sounds, animations and still images which can be freely re-used for educational purposes.
