How to Become a Reading Recovery Teacher
In order to be eligible for Reading Recovery training, you must be a credentialed teacher who is selected for training within your school district. Reading Recovery teachers are specially trained to work with struggling, first-grade readers in school settings, providing daily 30-minute lessons to individual children. Reading Recovery teaching requires a full academic year of training with university credit during a three-hour class one day a week.
San Diego State University’s Reading Recovery University Training Center provides professional development for Reading Recovery teacher leaders. These teacher leaders then provide year-long professional development programs for new Reading Recovery teachers and yearly continuing contact for trained Reading Recovery teachers within their local school districts.
San Diego State University’s Reading Recovery University Training Center currently supports Reading Recovery training sites in the following school districts: Colton (Joy Valadez, 909-876-6364, jvaladez07@charter.net); Jamul-Dulzura (Mary Otahal, 619-669-7847, motahal@msn.com); Long Beach (Kathy Brown and Jill Isbell-Rhodes 562-984-5897, kabrown@lbusd.k12.ca.us); Poway (Ryan Stanley, 858-748-0010 x2421, rstanley@powayusd.com); Torrance (Greta Stanton, 310-972-6972, gstanton@tusd.k12.ca.us); and Washington County, Utah (Geniel Huntington, 435-673-3553 x232, ghuntington@wash.k12.ut.us).
