Brief History
Marie Clay developed Reading Recovery® in New Zealand at the University of Auckland to serve first-grade students with difficulty learning to read and write. After two decades, Reading Recovery operates in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Dependent Schools.
Program Description
Reading Recovery is an intensive early intervention literacy program based on a child's specific strengths. Individual students receive 30 minute lessons each school day for 12 to 20 weeks with a specially trained Reading Recovery Teacher until they have learned to read and write as well as average students in their classrooms. University Training Centers train Teacher Leaders and provide support for Reading Recovery in the region. Reading Recovery teachers and Teacher Leaders are taught to use specific methods developed by Marie Clay to serve lowest achieving 1st grade students. Descubriendo La Lectura is an expansion of the Reading Recovery curriculum designed to serve bilingual children receiving primary instruction in Spanish.
University Training Center
The university-based Reading Recovery Training Center trains Teacher Leaders and Teacher Leaders-in-training who take part in year long graduate level courses that focus on theory, leadership, and careful observation of children's literacy behavior. The San Diego State University Training Center supports Reading Recovery in Southern California, Arizona, and Wyoming by providing professional development for Teacher Leaders and supporting the expansion of Reading Recovery in the regions.
