CENTER I- DISSECTING THE COW HEART AND SEEING WHAT BLOOD REALLY LOOKS LIKE

DIRECTIONS: THIS CENTER HAS TWO ACTIVITIES - DISSECTING A HEART AND SEEING BLOOD CELLS USING A MICROSCOPE. COMPLETE EACH OF THE SECTIONS BELOW AS YOU WORK AT EACH ACTIVITY.

ACTIVITY 1 - DISSECTING THE COW HEART

  1. FOR A REVIEW, LET'S DISCUSS WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THE HEART - WHAT FACTS DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT THE HUMAN HEART? HOW IS THE HEART SHAPED? WHAT PARTS DOES IT INCLUDE AND WHAT DO THEY EACH DO? HOW MANY CHAMBERS OR ROOMS DOES THE HUMAN HEART HAVE? WRITE DOWN AT 2-3 ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS BELOW:

     

  2. NOW LET'S LOOK AT THE DIAGRAM WITH ALL THE PARTS OF THE HEART LABELLED AND COMPARE OUR ANSWERS ABOVE WITH THE INFORMATION ON THE DIAGRAM. WHAT DID WE KNOW? WHAT DID WE LEAVE OUT?

     

  3. NOW COMPARE THE PAPER DIAGRAM OF THE HEART TO THE ACTUAL COW HEART.
    1. FIND EACH PART OF THE HEART LABELLED ON THE DIAGRAM ON THE COW HEART.
    2. WRITE DOWN EACH PART YOU FIND ON THE HEART BELOW.

       

    3. HOW DOES THE ACTUAL HEART DIFFER FROM THE DIAGRAM?

  4. EXTENSION ACTIVITY - AFTER FINISHING STEPS 1-3, MOVE TO THE CONSTRUCTION STATION AND BUILD A MODEL OF THE HEART USING THE ITEMS ON THE TABLE. BE SURE TO INCLUDE EACH PART OF THE HEART IN YOUR MODEL. LABEL EACH PART IF YOU HAVE TIME. FINISH THIS AT HOME WITH YOUR FAMILY TO DEMONSTRATE YOUR HEART SMARTS.

ACTIVITY 2 - SEEING BLOOD UNDER A MICROSCOPE

  1. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN BLOOD? WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE WHEN YOU ARE CUT OR BLEEDING AND SEEING IT WITH JUST YOUR EYES?

     

  2. HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR BLOOD MIGHT LOOK LIKE UNDER A MICROSCOPE? DRAW A PREDICTION BELOW.

     

  3. NOW LET'S LOOK AT BLOOD UNDER A MICROSCOPE. DRAW AND LABEL WHAT YOU SEE BELOW.

     


CENTER 2 - HOW DO WE DIGEST FOOD?

  1. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN IF YOU PUT A PIECE OF CRACKER IN YOUR MOUTH FOR A MINUTE WITHOUT CHEWING? WRITE YOUR PREDICTION BELOW.

  2. NOW LET'S TRY IT.
    1. IN PARTNERS, TAKE A SMALL PIECE OF CRACKER AND PLACE IT ON YOUR TONGUE.
    2. CLOSE YOUR MOUTH AND LET IT SIT THERE FOR 1 MINUTE.
    3. OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND LET YOUR PARTNER DESCRIBE WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE CRACKER.
    4. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS HAPPENING IN YOUR MOUTH?

  3. LET'S DO AN EXPERIMENT TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENS TO FOOD IN OUR MOUTHS.

    1. IN TEST TUBE 1 - PLACE CRACKER CRUMBS AND 6 DROPS OF IODINE IN TEST TUBE 1. WHAT HAPPENED IN TUBE 1 AND WHY?
      WHAT IS STARCH (A TYPE OF CARBOHYDRATE)?

       

    2. IN TEST TUBE 2 - PLACE CRACKER CRUMBS AND 30 DROPS OF BENEDICT'S SOLUTION IN TEST TUBE 2 AND HEAT FOR 1-2 MINUTES IN HOT WATER. PREDICT WHAT YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN AND WHY?

       

      WHAT HAPPENED IN TEST TUBE 2 AND WHY?

       

    3. IN TEST TUBE 3 - PLACE ENOUGH SALIVA TO COVER THE BOTTOM OF THE TEST TUBE. ADD CRACKER CRUMBS AND 30 DROPS OF BENEDICT'S SOLUTION. HEAT FOR 1-2 MINUTES IN HOT WATER. PREDICT WHAT YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN AND WHY?

       

      WHAT HAPPENED IN TEST TUBE 3 AND WHY?

       

    4. COMPARE TEST TUBE 2 AND 3. HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT? WHY ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

       

    5. WHAT DOES THIS TELL US ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS TO FOOD IN OUR MOUTHS?
