Professor and Chair of Department of Special Education at San Diego State University.

Background

After college, I taught pre-school for several years and eventually earned my Master's Degree with a focus on teaching students with learning disabilities. I taught elementary school in special education for four years and then pursued my Ph.D. During my Ph.D. work I supervised student teachers and taught in various educational settings including high school students with behavioral disabilities. My dissertation research was in the area of metacomprehension and direct instruction in reading. My first academic position in 1984 was at University of South Carolina-Coastal Campus. My research in reading continued. In 1987, I accepted a position at Sacramento State University in the Department of Special Education. Since 1987, my research shifted to a focus on the writing. In 1990, I accepted my current position at San Diego State Univeristy in the Department of Special Education where I have taught credential candidates and masters and doctoral students. Since 1990, I have studied reading and writing instruction for students with disabilities with a focus on English learners.

Interests, Activities & Plans

My research has continued in the area of reading and writing instruction including English learners. Jana Echevarria and I have recently completed the third edition of our book entitled: Sheltered Content Instruction: Teaching English Language Learners with Diverse Abilities. A major focus of my work is collaboration with teachers in local schools. Recently, I managed a once-a-week, after school reading club in which University students and peers tutored students having difficulty in reading. My current research project is a longitudinal study of English learners in southeast San Diego that began in Fall, 1999 and has continued to the present.
