Current Position

Professor, Department of Educational Technology, San Diego State University, 1990- . Teaches graduate courses on educational product design, interactive multimedia, and the psychology of technology-based learning. Member of the Faculty, SDSU-Clairemont Graduate School Joint Doctoral Program. Director, SDSU Center for Learning, Instruction, & Performance Technologies. Author of of over 50 articles, chapters, and other publications on technology and learning.

Research and development interests focus on instructional design theory and application of advanced computer-based media to education and training. Co-Founder, San Diego Consortium for Workforce Education and Lifelong Learning. Consultant on instructional design to Fortune 500 companies and governement agencies including AT&T, Sony, Digital Equipment Corporation, and US Department of Defense agencies. President, Division of Instructional Development, Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 1990. (Associate Professor, SDSU, 1986-1990; Assistant Professor, 1982-86.)

 

Other Professional Experience

Consultant in Educational Technology and Research Assistant, University of Southern California, 1980-1982. Projects focused on interactive video, computer-assisted instruction, video conferencing, and electronic mail systems. Planned and managed research project on computer-based instruction for US Navy Personnel Research and Development Center.

Media Specialist, Mt. Diablo Unified School District, Concord, CA, 1977-80. Assistant to director of instructional media center for a school district with 50,000 students. Consulted with schools and programs on media-based education. Coordinated workshops for teachers and administrators. Developed grant proposals and managed instructional development projects. Wrote and produced video and multimedia presentations. California State Credential in School Administration/Supervision, 1975-80.

Associate, F. Allen Grant Associates, Ltd., Greenwich, CN, 1975-77. Developed training programs on advanced office communications systems for 1000 managers and administrative assistants at a Fortune-100 corporation. Managed contracts for training workshops and media production projects. Analyzed office communications systems. Wrote technical reports and proposals for corporate and government clients.

Teacher, Mt. Diablo Unified School District, Concord, CA, 1971-74. Worked with various age/ability groups, including adults, high school dropouts, and the mentally gifted. California State Credential in Elementary Education (Life).
