Professor, School of Teacher Education, Program in Reading and Literacy Professor, Doctoral Program, SDSU and Claremont Graduate School

Background

As a Professor of Reading and Literacy Development, I have conducted research in the areas of teacher development; literacy instruction in preschool, elementasry and secondary school classrooms; the teaching and learning of literature for children and adults; and the effects of broadening conceptualizations of literacy to include the visual and communicative arts.

Prior to coming to San Diego State University, I was a tenured Associate Professor of Reading and Language and faculty member within the Program in Psycholinguistics at Boston University. Before that I taught at La Guardia Community College of the City University of New York and at the University of San Francisco. I have also been a preschool, elementary and secondary school teacher in New York, New Hampshire and California.

I have served as a Senior Research Fulbright Scholar at the University of Lisbon, Portugal in the Department of Psychology and Educational Studies.

I have also served as a member of the Board of Directors and President of the National Reading Conference. I have also served as Chair and member of several committees for the International Reading Association, National Council of Teachers of English and the American Educational Research Association.

Interests, Activities & Plans

I am currently involved in conducting research in several areas of literacy development. One of my most recent interests is in the area of Literature Discussion Groups (Book Clubs) that are comprised of adults or children. Most recently, I have been conducting research on Teacher Book Clubs with Diane Lapp. Our research has been in the ways that student teachers move from their experiences as participants in our preservice teacher book clubs to instructors who conduct Book Clubs in their own classrooms.

Additionally, I am interested in and involved with the design and development of educational materials for students throughout their educational development.

I am completing work as a general editor with Diane Lapp and Shirley Brice Heath on The Handbook for Literacy Educators: Research on Teaching the Visual and Communicative Arts.
