Background

A native Californian, I grew up in the Los Angeles area. I began my teaching career in Tucson, Arizona and have since taught in Puebla, Mexico and Krakow, Poland in addition to Arizona and California. I have been involved in education since 1970 as a teacher, teacher educator, researcher and consultant. My research has been primarily in the area of bilingual literacy acqusition and issues related to language policy and bilingual education. My dissertation focused on academic literacy acquisition by Tohono O'odham. Another major area of interst is curriculum development at the university and state level.

Interests, Activities & Plans

My recent activities include being the Task Force Chair for English Language Development (ELD) Standards for the State of California under SB 748, serving on the Board of Directors of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (1996-99) and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, English as a New Language, Advisory Board (June, 1998-June, 1999). In addition, I served as President of the California Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL) organization from 1993-94, and in 1999 received their Sadae Iwataki Award for Service to the organization and field.

At SDSU, I serve as the Graduate Advisor for the Policy Studies Department, which includes two M.A. options and certification of CLAD (Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development) teachers. I also coordinate the Mexico BCLAD credential program and teach in the Joint Doctoral with Claremont Graduate University.

My research focuses on a five year longitudinal study of literacy development through journal writing of children in a two-way (Spanish/English) bilingual program, from first through fifth grade. Three articles already have been published in addition to numerous presentations at state and national conferences and two M.A. theses. Several more articles are planned to be completed in the near future. I am also the co-editor of Cross Cultural Literacy, an edited volume with Fraida Dubin, (Prentice Hall, 1993).

Other Interesting Things

Away from the educational arena, I am an avid tennis player, mystery reader, occasional potter and frequent traveler.
