Academic Background
Author of more than 50 published articles and book chapters. My work has appeared in Social Education, Theory and Research in Social Education, The Social Studies, The International Journal of Social Education, The Clearing House, and in other leading journals. Formerly a middle school and high school teacher, I have served as a university professor since 1986.
Interests, Activities & Plans
Editor of the Handbook on Teaching Social Issues, published as a bulletin of the National Council for the Social Studies in 1996. The volume includes contributions from more than 50 leading social studies educators.
My most recent project is a book on the history of social studies in the United States titled, The War on Social Studies and the Struggle for Meaningful Learning. The bookís thesis is that what began as a turf struggle among competing camps evolved into a war against progressive social studies that has changed the curriculum.
Other Interesting Things
I like the Dodgers, basketball, cool jazz, Dylan, camping and hiking, Dada and surrealist art, travel, kids, leftist politics, Unitarianism, Buddhism, and spending time with my family.
