ABOUT THIS WEBSITE
"Amigos" began as an experimental collaboration between Dr. Carmen Guanipa, Counseling and School Psychology Program at San Diego State University and Linda Woods Hyman, Pacific Bell Education First in 1996. The site has continued to grow and as a result in 1999 was split into two distinct parts. The original Amigos website resides at San Diego State University and is under the direction of Dr. Guanipa. Especially Espanol contains the new activities and resources available from the Pacific Bell Knowledge Network Explorer. Especially Espanol is intended to complement the information found on Amigos and to provide greater flexibility.
ORIGINAL PROPOSAL: (1) create an Internet based website of interest to, but not limited to, ethnically diverse middle school and high school students, parents and interested adults and (2) promote and participate in videoconferencing sessions and other collaborative technologies with students, teachers and others who want information about ethnic diversity, culture shock, self-esteem, and other topics.
POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS: Public library patrons, students, teachers, parents and others with access to the Internet and/or videoconferencing.
RATIONALE: the Internet provides anonymity, interactivity, and is free. Videoconferencing provides interactive, face to face meetings and discussions, and adapts to the needs of the participants.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS: address the general information needs of library patrons, students, parents and others; provide ideas for further research or discussion; provide resources needed to begin solving problems.
POTENTIAL OUTCOMES: establish interaction between various institutions; provide training or education to schools or libraries; open up a dialogue between diverse groups with similar interests; provide a community service; increase awareness among San Diego residents of the existence of the Individual and Family Counseling Clinic.
ORIGINAL COMPONENTS: the Amigos website consists of several pages.
- Carmen Says (Dice Carmen): directed toward adults and adolescents. Users will be able read informational essays that will be posted on the web site on a variety of topics. We will provide a mechanism to allow users to ask questions. We will answer simple questions of a very general nature and provide referral and information. It is not a counseling or advice service.
Information and Resources (Informaccion y Recursos): an online resource for locating help and information based on the most popular topics. This includes links to other webpages and agencies that specialize in providing information and/or services. (This site was incorporated into Especially Espanol in 1999.)
Sharing Multicultural Experiences (Comparta Experiencias ): intergenerational experiences and stories drawn from students and teachers about personal struggles with multiculturalism and how they overcame it. What worked, what didn't. This is a web-based activity.
note: Answers, Rules of the Road, and the Survey were added in 1997 and 1998.
