Willa Cather (1873-1947) was a U.S. novelist, possibly best know for her novels: "O Pioneers!" and "My Antonia." In 1923, Cather won a Pulitzer Prize for her novel "One of Ours."
Bessie Smith (1894-1937) was thought by many to be the greatest singer in history. Her first recording, "Down-Hearted Blues," sold 780,000 records in less than six months.
