James Baldwin (1924-1987) was a writer and strong supporter of the black civil rights movement and the gay rights movement. Some of Baldwin's exceptional works are: Go Tell It on the Mountain, Giovanni's Room, Another Country, and The Fire Next Time.
Malcolm Boyd (1923- ) is a U.S. theologian who worked actively in the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement (Vietnam). His best-selling book Are You Running with Me, Jesus?, won him national fame and respect.
May Sarton (1912- ) is a Belgian-born U.S. writer who writes in many forms including poetry, fiction, memoirs, and journa;s. In 1965, she publically acknowledged her lesbianism in the publication Mrs. Stevens Hears the Mermaids Singing. As a result of this book, she lost her teaching job, but her writing career continued to blossom.
