Sergeant Miriam Ben-Shalom was discharged from military service in 1975 for being a homosexual. She had stated clearly on her enlistment papers, the year prior, that she was a lesbian. Sgt Ben-Shalom spent 13 years in court battle and in 1988 the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago ruled that the military could not ban her from service because she is a lesbian.
