50 Strategies for Teaching
English Language Learners

Jill Kerper Mora, Ed. D.
San Diego State University

This page is provided for teacher education students using the textbook Herrell, 2000 in courses on ESL, ELD/SDAIE and other methods courses. Many of the strategies are linked to resources on Dr. Mora's CLAD Website that elaborate on uses of the teaching approach or give examples of activities.

Herrell, A. L. (2000). Fifty Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Merrill.

*These 50 strategies are listed in the Table of Contents of Herrell, 2000 in alphabetical order. Consequently, page numbers are not given.

Most of the activities described in the 50 Strategies utilize and integrate the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, each activity tends to have a focus skill. The focus skill is the basis for this categorization. Critical thinking and study skills require higher-level integration of all four skills. Click here for additional activities focused on each of the four levels of language proficiency and four language arts skills.
