Description

The San Diego Mathematics Project, one of the seventeen sites of the California Mathematics Project, has been in existence since 1983. Its primary goal is to improve mathematics education in a significant number of schools in San Diego and Imperial Counties through the development of leadership among classroom teachers.

During odd numbered years the project focuses on schools and/or districts that participate through the long term three year involvement of teams consisting of two or more teacher leaders in our Leadership Institute. The same group of teachers remains together for the three year duration of the institute, developing their mathematics and leadership skills, working with their schools and districts on plans to improve mathematics education, and emerging as key players in the mathematics reform movement at the local, state, and regional levels. Applications for SDMP program s are available in January and due in April of each year.

During even numbered years the project focuses on individual teachers who participate in a one year program. The project seeks out teachers with a desire to explore what involvement in the SDMP entails, teachers of color, and teachers working with students from underrepresented groups. At the conclusion of the one year program, participants are encouraged to apply for our three year Leadership Institute.

SDMP activities include summer workshops that last from one to three weeks, a weekend retreat at Lake Arrowhead, and various Saturday follow-up meetings during the year. All meetings include a focus on 1) mathematics, 2) issues in mathematics education such as curriculum, instruction, assessment, equity, and technology and 3) effecting school change. In collaboration with various local mathematics education projects and the San Diego County Office of Education the SDMP sponsors an equity in mathematics one day conference for teachers of color, teachers of students of color, and parents of color in the spring.

During the past twelve years, the San Diego Mathematics Project has touched over 500 teachers. Many have been involved for an extended period with the project and now assume major teacher leadership roles in their schools and districts and with local, regional and national professional organizations. These roles are in a constantly developing state and many were unanticipated when the project first began. The project has grown significantly from the leadership and experience brought to it by our teaching force.
