Community
Clear
View Charter School is an elementary school for grades K-6 in a
friendly and diverse neighborhood in Chula Vista near H Street and
the 805 freeway. San Diego State University's credential program
is provided with a classroom on site because Clear View is a professional
development school. Clear View serves its community in many ways,
such as by hosting a "primary Spanish-language program" in grades
K-3. The school's Code of Conduct encourages Respect, Responsibility,
and Self-Control, and the faculty and staff collectively strive
to nurture active learners and responsible citizens. Student teachers
were able to contribute to this end by participating in a new weekly
tutoring program in Spring 2001 that benefited both Clear View students
and the future teachers themselves.

Assemblies
One
of the most valuable activities in which the entire Clear View community
participates is the weekly, all-school assembly. On Thursdays, the
Clear View Crusaders wear their matching T-shirts and meet in the
auditorium for a half-hour of fun, singing, and special presentations.
Assemblies are one of the highlights of being part of the Clear
View Block. Prior to the beginning of school, each student teacher
is assigned to a Clear View teacher and class. On Thursday mornings,
student teachers are able to spend time with those students and
enjoy the assembly.

Families
Following
the assembly every Thursday morning, Clear View teachers and students
meet with their "families", an idea unique to this site. Each teacher
leads a multi-age group of students, and the children remain in
the same "family" during their entire education at Clear View. Student
teachers join the weekly gatherings while taking methods classes,
quickly get to know the children, and are often given opportunities
to learn new activities and join the teachers in leading the meetings.

Shared
Expertise
Student
teachers in the Clear View Block always learn a great deal from the
teachers at the school. Their doors are wide open for observations,
and they are happy to answer questions and help whenever possible.
Clear View teachers are generous enough to also support the student
teachers by hosting sessions called Shared Expertise. They offer workshops
in which they share their valuable skills with future teachers. Some
Shared Expertise sessions include standards-based teaching, unit planning,
music, drama, and movement in the classroom, directed drawing, and
Power Teaching. Clear View student teachers are incredibly well-prepared
for teaching, not only because of quality methods courses and meaningful
student teaching placements, but also because they have positive role
models at Clear View Charter School
