About the Program

Clear View Charter School, professional development school

Team Leader: Dr. Cathy A. Pohan (594-4781; pohan@mail.sdsu.edu)

This two-semester program held on-site at Clear View Elementary School in the Chula Vista Elementary School District seeks to develop in teachers the understandings, attitudes, and strategies for working successfully in a multicultural and linguistically diverse environment.

The program begins in the Fall and finishes in the Spring. Student teachers should plan to keep a typical teacher's schedule of 7:30 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. Students typically spend the first week of the Fall semester working alongside a classroom teacher, setting up the classroom environment, and then observing the first days of school. Courses often begin two weeks before the regular SDSU semester.

This program is unique in many ways. First, it is site-based at a model technology school. Second, in addition to a very strong instructional team from SDSU, faculty at Clear View offer workshops (Shared Expertise) for the student teachers on various topics related to teaching. Third, the program has a special focus on diversity, second language acquisition, and SDAIE (sheltered English) strategies. The program also focuses on the importance of aligning curriculum and activities with the California State Content Standards. Finally, student teacher placements are secured across the district in order to provide students with opportunities to work in diverse settings.

About this Web Site

A group of 2000-2001 student teachers decided to work together and create a website, not only to inform and excite future teachers about the Clear View Block, but also to share our experiences with you. One of our assignments for our Science methods course was that we each serve others and the community through a self-selected, peer evaluated avenue. For example, several student teachers formed a Clear View Garden Team, while others created scrapbooks, cooked gourmet food for the class, and organized recycling projects. Since technology is one of the block's highest priorities, a few of us felt inspired to build our own web site, and our Science professor, Randy Yerrick, volunteered to help guide and direct us through the process.

We have constructed this site for you based on what we feel you would like to know about the Clear View Block. We have asked many questions along the way, and we hope that this site gives you a vivid picture of a year in the Clear View Block. We will be maintaining and updating the site, and we will also plan to pass on the privilege to future student teachers who would also like to serve others this way.
