Educating pre-service teachers regarding the misconceptions of phase changes

This iMovie was made while preparing science teachers to teach the concept of energy transfer during a phase change. The instructor used a microcomputer-based laboratory (MBL) to gather live data while discussing common naive conceptions associated with the observations of students. There are many stumbling blocks associated with these events including the notions that "air is in the bubbles of boiling water" and these demonstrations and iMovies are meant to assist prospective teachers in addressing the conceptual as well as pedagogical issues of teaching children science. Subsequent to these lessons, prospective teachers are engaged in planning their own lessons to engage children in constructing their own knowledge surrounding commonly misunderstood phenomena.
