What is the origin of the wild horses?
There are likely many myths associated with how wild horses arrived on the North Carolina Barrier Islands. Students can hypothesize about how the horses got on the island from informed accounts of exotic species in other parts of the world. Examples might include Galapagos Island or Polynesian flora and fauna life versus introduced species in Australia and other parts of the world where Western Expansionists caused great damage in local ecosystems. Students can read the story of how the horses were introduced to the North Carolina Outer Banks by a wealthy land owner to check their hypotheses.
