Student teacher at O'Farrell in the SDSU credential program with an English major

Background

I was born in San Diego and raised in Leucadia in the 1970s and 80s and have grown up loving the ocean and the California coast as well the cultures and people here. My high school career was very rocky and it wasn't until my senior year that I began to consider college. I earned by BA in English at SDSU and went on to pursue a graduate degree also in English. For the past four years I have been working as a technical writer for a small biotech company here in San Diego.

Interests, Activities & Plans

I took an indirect route to teaching. While writing my masters thesis on cultural differences and literature, I realized that San Diego, especially the classrooms here, were where t he ideas we spent so much time discsussing were a reality. I decided that instead of pursuing a doctorate and spending my professional life discussing cultural differences and multicultural learning within the university what I really wanted to do was to work with kids who are living and learning in the real world . The more I hear about the troubles in education and the lack of faith in adolescents the more committed I become to doing something positive for kids I believe in.

Other Interesting Things

I spend my free time surfing, running and cycling. Currently, I live in PB and have been married for about nine months. When I get time off for vacations I like to visit San Francisco which is my home away from home and I take backpacking trips whenever possible. I'm not much for Club-Med type vacations and I hope to travel to Costa Rica and Guatemala someday. I want to increase my Spanish language skills and it is my goal to be fluent within five years. I'm passionate about literature and have thoughts of becoming a freelance writer. I also dream of becoming a mother and running a marathon - both endurance events.
