The common positive responses were that the community was a good place to live. Many of the residents had resided in the area over twenty years, and enjoyed the local area. One resident liked the fact that there were numerous police substations in the area. There was a diverse response for religious affiliations in the candidates we questioned. There is a recreation center next to the Martin Luther King Park community pool with a baseball field, baseball, and football field available for the youth. There is a Malcolm X Library for the community. One of the adult hang outs was Backstage a local night club, and aerobics are offered at the local elementary school.
The negative responses included too many local liquor and drug dealing. There was complaints in regards to gangs and gang activity. One of the interviewee's reported a gang incident that included gun fire. Lack of retail services was another complaint especially in terms of large retail chain stores such Target, K mart, grocery stores, and clothing stores. Three out of four interviewee's did not know much about the neighborhood.
The overall consensus was that the residents were comfortable with living in the neighborhood, but the commute for retail services was discouraging.
