The responses we received fell into two categories, those from educators/social workers, and those from people in non-related professions. For example, people within the first category, stressed patience, understanding, mutual respect, and avoiding long-established stereotypes. Maintaining communication lines with the parents of students was equally important in fostering a well balanced, educational experience. One woman, from the Boys and Girls Club, stated that a teacher needs passion to "run with the ball".
In contrast, people outside the profession
exhibited a more disciplinary approach to education, taking a harsher
view towards students and the methods needed to control them . "Be
yourself, because kids are like animals, and they smell fear,"
cautioned one local business man, who didn't hesitate to volunteer
his half-million-a-year salary as testimony to his wisdom. A liquor
store owner seemed to think that schools are doomed, and new teachers
don't stand a chance of providing the discipline today's students
need in order to succeed. At any rate, it is clear that we have our
work cut out for us.
