Olvera and Las Flores

Many of the houses in this hilly neighborhood (around the corner of Olvera and Las Flores) were well-kept, with green, trimmed lawns, recently painted fences, and attractive yards. Other houses had brown lawns, often with various small items strewn on the lawns, and in various stages of disrepair. Some of the houses were painted in bright colors, including turquoise and pink. Most appeared to have 2-3 bedrooms and were one story. About half the houses were secured with bars on the windows. However, some of the garages were open The view at the corner of Olvera and Las Flores is spectacular, offering a "skyline" view of downtown and the Coronado Bridge.

A few of the cars were new. Most, however, were used, late 80's-early 90's models. We saw a boat in one of the driveways. Most of the cars appeared to be in good shape. We only saw a few people walking around. The neighborhood was quiet.

Postscript: Seven Months Later

In some respects our impression of the neighborhood has changed. We felt more relaxed going through the neighborhood. In part this may be due to the weather. It has rained a fair amount recently, and there was more vegetation than we remembered. Many flowers were in bloom (after all, one of the streets is named "Las Flores.")

The houses in the neighborhood seem to be somewhat neater than we remember. The yards seemed neater. Moreover, we had forgotten how close the neighborhood is to the ocean, and how beautiful the view was from many of the houses.
