Encanto Boys & Girls Club |
|
The Boys and Girls Club is located on the corner of Imperial Avenue and 68th Street in Encanto. It is situated in an urban area and is home to the Head Start Program for children ages three to five. The parking lot of the facility and adjacent basketball court is cracked and weed-ridden, revealing a lack of funds for upkeep of the grounds. Nearby the Boys and Girls Club there is a well-maintained grassy park with trees to provide shade for visitors. East of the club lies a large intersection and street consisting of liquor stores, a church, and taco shops. Across the street, the San Diego Trolley carries passengers along Imperial Avenue. Many local students use the trolley for transportation.
The external appearance of the building is clean and appears to be freshly-painted. It did, however, lack an abundant amount of vegetation, such as trees, ground cover, and flowers to brighten the area. During the time of our visit, parents hustled their children from cars into the building in time for the "Twilight Time" head start program. Teacher supervisors kept watch over the outside playground, which was strewn with tricycles and laughing children.
Inside, the walls were relatively bare. There were, though, two photographs by the entrance: one of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the other of an idealized Anglo family about to gorge themselves on Thanksgiving Day, which struck us as odd. Employees of the club had pictures of the children hanging on the walls near their desks, as well as visuals of food and clothing. The staff was friendly and greeted us with warm smiles.
The people we met were receptive, friendly, and helpful in our endeavor to familiarize ourselves with the community. They provide a safe environment where parents can bring their children. However, the director's hesitancy towards taking photographs of the facility and children was telling of the serious issues they must confront on a regular basis. Overall, our visit to the Encanto Boys and Girls Club was a positive and valuable experience.
