Once upon a time, there were a bunch of kids at an ice cream truck and a student teacher with a craving for chocolate ice cream. Across the street, a bunch of kids were being hosed down by their father. The neighborhood was an older neighborhood, not run-down, but smaller homes. The lawns were brown and full of things (toys, hoses, cars). There were A LOT of kids, all along the street. This gave the area more of a community feel, but there wasn't anywhere else for the kids to go. The ice cream truck was the center of attention and the only place to buy candy, cola, ice cream, or anything else cold.
The kids and people were friendly and helpful. They greeted the ice cream craving student. They spoke mostly Spanish and English. The kids spoke English to each other and Spanish to the adults. Everyone was dressed for very hot weather. We saw at least three small inflatable pools and an above-ground pool and these were very busy. A lot of people were sitting outside in the shade. There was a little graffiti on signs, but none on houses or sheds.
(To be completely honest, we stopped at Iona and Brooklyn, because that was where the ice c ream truck was.)
