Social Science student teacher - working at a O'Farrell Community Middle School.

Background

I grew up in West Los Angeles near Venice, a suburb of Los Angeles. My parents moved to Temecula, a small sleepy town, when I was sixteen. The high school I went to had only one hundred students and I graduated in a class of twelve.

I have always enjoyed working outdoors, so I usually chose jobs that had something to do with working outside. After high schooI, I worked as a soils technician for a soils engineering firm where I tested soils before a home or building was built. One summer, I decided to try something I had not tried before , so I worked in a avocado processing warehouse where I helped process avocadoes before they were to be shipped.

While I was at college and to pay for my scholarship, I worked on campus doing landscaping and other maintenance tasks. Again, I really enjoyed the landscaping work because I could work outdoors and work with my hands. As one who has always been interested in the political process and how polls work, I decided to work for a telephone polling firm. I had the opportunity to talk with people from throughout the United States and that was thrilling because you were able to hear different accents and to get an understanding of why people felt so strongly about some of their opinions.

After graduating from college, I worked for a state Assemblyman (state legislator). It was always a dream of mine to work for a state legislator and I was able to work for him in Sacramento at the State Capitol and in his district office in San Diego County. As I worked at the State Capitol, I got disillusioned by the hyprocrisy that I saw and so I looked at working at a more local level of government, that being city government. My experience working in city government showed me that I still wasn't influencing their lives as extensively as I wanted , so I decided to change my profession and work with adolescents.

I worked in a adolescent psychiatric facility and residential home where students had behavioral problems (suicide, eating disorder, etc.) and also had learning problems. I saw that there was a need to teach students that others shunned. Most recently, I worked as a Resource Specialist Program Teacher working with Special Education students.

Interests, Activities & Plans

I am interested in pursuing a Single Subject Teacher Credential (Social Science) and working at the middle or senior high school level. Also, I am involved in getting my Special Education credential and RSP certificate. Since SDSU's Special Ed requirements are pretty thorough, I have also thought that I may look at going after a Master's in Special Ed.

I recently got married and I am enjoying it tremendously. Hopefully, in the future we will have a couple of kids, but one day at a time.

Due to the fact that I recently got married, I have not been as busy in outside activities. But I hope that I will have a regular schedule filled with activities such as church related activities and traveling with my wife, after things settle down.

Other Interesting Things

Hobbies: watching sports, travelling anywhere and everywhere, reading maps, reading political biographies - especially of Presidents, playing baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball and watching old movies (black & white). I also love to try eating different foods except if they are too spicy or too hot.
