Building

in to Ancient Egypt

WebQuest

by: Jodie Rader

You are about to begin a journey, a journey back in time to Ancient Egypt. Along the way you will learn about the building of the magnificent Pyramids, hieroglyphics, the many pharaohs Egyptians worshiped and the unusual mummification process.

First you will be assigned into a family of four. Each member in your family has a particular job or duty to preform during ancient Egypt times. You will meet back with your family and enlighten other members on your day. Then, as a family, you must prepare a report to present to the King. Finally, give a short presentation (10 - 15 minutes) in front of the king and all the royal court.

To help you on your way you may want to learn more about the daily life in Ancient Egypt.

Each member in your family has one of the following jobs or duties:

The Builder

Your task as the builder of the Great Pyramids is, well, great. Unfortunately your family has never visited the site where you work so you must describe to them what exactly it is you are doing and why you are doing it. Explain to them what the inside will look like and what it will hold. Then, describe the type of material you are using to build the pyramids.

Your hardest task as builder is the actual moving of the great stone slabs. Check out the The Great Pyramids site and come up with a theory on how you are able to move, carry and place each piece of the pyramid.

The Scribe

Your job as a scribe is to basically write. Many people during this time could not or did not want to read or write. Instead, they hire people called scribes to do it for them. Scribes write in an ancient writing called hieroglyphics. The hieroglyphics are figures and objects that stand for

words, similar to a secret code.

After you have spent a long day working, explain how it went to your family. They are wondering what you do on a typical day. Also, each member in your family wants to see their names written down in hieroglyphics. Being the wonderful family member that you are, you try your best to please them.

The Gods

You are the family member who has the important job of pleasing the gods. This is difficult to do because there are so many gods and goddesses with different powers and consequences. You must first decide which gods or goddesses (3 - 4) you are going to please.

You may want to begin with the most important gods such as Ra, Osiris, Horus and Isis. Explain to your family why you are pleasing these gods, how you are doing that and what will happen to the family if you do not perform your duty. To help your family visualize the importance and strengths of the gods describe, in great detail, what the gods look like. Choose one of these and make your best drawing.

The Mummifier

During this time when people die, their bodies are put through a process called mummification. Many kings and queens, after being mummified were laid to rest in tombs. You may want to tour a tomb to learn more about the burial process.

You have been chosen for this sacred job of mummifying. However, your other family members do not understand the process or why you would do such a thing to a body. Give a step by step description of what you did to the body that came in today.

The Dinner

Now your family has just come home from a long day at work. All members of your family are sitting down to dinner and will discuss the days activities. Each member will share their job descriptions and information while at the table. As a family, you must decide how you will present this information to the King and his royal court. After your presentation you must also turn in your written documents.
