ENGLISH LESSON

Week ONE

focus: The focus of this week's activities will be Lewis Carroll's literary style and biographical background.

objective: This lesson is designed to offer students an opportunity to explore Carroll's life and his motivation in writing stories such as Through the Looking Glass and Alice in Wonderland. This biographical data will also link Carroll's literature with his logic and mathmatical ingenuity.

Breakdown:

Monday: video/ biography notes

Tuesday: video/ biography notes

Wednesday:Through the Looking Glass excerpts--analyzing style. Have students attempt to imitate Carroll's writing style in a short story of their own (perhaps utilizing one of the main characters from the novel).

Thursday: Jaberwocky Have students read the poem and attempt to imitate style and nonsense words by writing a class poem of their own (short!) Each student can write a line of their own, then combine all lines for a very creative result!

Friday- Writing workshop...five paragraph essay analyzing style

WEEK Two

focus: Carroll's artistic style (via photographs and linguistic technique) and how this technique is related to the Victorian Age.

objectives: Students will be able to identify aesthetic value and geometrical shapes in Carroll's photography, as well as gain an understanding of linguistics and Victorian England.

Breakdown:

Monday: review Jaberwocky from last week. This time, discuss linguistic uses of nouns and verbs; i.e. how we do not know what a "bandersnatch" is, but we do know that it is a noun, etc. Choose a list of words that students can imagine what the words mean, then have a discussion on student reaction similarities. Discuss nouns, verbs, adjectives.

Tuesday: photography appreciation: have students analyze xeroxed copies (or visit websites, if computer access is available) of Carroll's photographs.

Wednesday: continue above. Option: students may bring polaroid cameras and attempt to recreate Carroll's style. Prizes for best photos.

Thursday: Research on web, library, or take lecture notes from teacher on Victorian England. Option: assign a research paper on this era.

Friday: Victorian high tea: previous planning will be required for this...students can plan a week in advance, by preparing : how they will dress, menu, Victorian etiquette, etc.

week three

focus: Carroll's "puzzling" style-- logic puzzles and advertisement campaign

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to solve linguistic logic puzzles. Carroll's logic puzzles encompass grammatical conventions, literature, and mathematical concepts, so, since this is the last week of the unit, it helps to solidify the items that math and English have in common.

Breakdown:

Monday: Logic puzzles--students are given a sheet of xeroxed puzzles, which they solve in groups of three people. Have a contest to see which group correctly completes the sheet first; this will increase motivation.

Tuesday: Same. Rewards for finishing first might be candy bars or other treats!!

Wednesday: Begin "advertisement campaign" for Victorian products (any, such as soap, detergent, clothing, etc.) using a logic puzzle as a "ditty" or slogan.. Students should be arranged in groups of 3-4 for this activity.

Thursday: Group work time, creating posters, writing up a one page advertisement. The poster should have the logic puzzle on it, and can include Carroll photos, or photos taken with Polaroid camera in class. Students will present their advertisements, along with the product they are advertising (if clothing, bring in sample of Victorian clothing; if soap or perfume: bring in a sample) on Friday. This is a chance for students to show off what they have learned about Victorian England, Lewis Carroll's style, photography, linguistics, and word manipulation.

Friday: Presentations of advertisement campaigns.
