Day four:

Tile Tessellations

Throughout Art History

Objectives-

* Students will be able to recognize the use of tessellations throughout history.

*Students will utilize web based information to familiarize themselves with the construction of tessallations and its applications to tilework.

Intro- Tessellations have been used in tilework for centuries. Artists since the early byzantine have been practicing the ancient art of pictoral tilework to portray icons and to adorn the the walls of their temples. This sort of craft is called mosaic. A mosaic is a picture made out of glass, or ceramic tile. The finished product is used to embellish walls, floors, and objects of art. You have been choosen to create mosaic tiles with tessellating imagery. The tiles are commissioned by the King and will be used to create a new wing of his palace. You will work in the same manner as the journeyman before you throughout history.

Your job is to investigate:

*What is a tessellation?

* How has Mosaic tile artwork been used throughout art history?

*What periods in art used mosaic tile artwork that used tessellating themes?

* Images and examples of tessellating mosaics that you may use as a starting point for constructive ideas.

Body- You will be responsible for investigating these themes and answering the questions from above. I wish for you to have a deeper understanding of the history and use of this sort of tilework. Below I have compiled a list of useful websites that you can use for investigaton. Some of these websites are historically based, others are projects in which you can practice the application of tessellations and how they are constructed. Jot down the answers and examples for the questions above. A one page write up is due for day two of this project.
