Project 5: DTP&endash;Classroom Newsletter

Desktop publishing contains elements of word processing, graphics, scanned images, and aesthetic page layout. This assignment will give you experience with each. Due to the complexity of this assignment, you may either work by yourself or with another student with whom you share common interests. Your newsletter should focus on a topic relevant to your semester project. You may develop your newsletter in a full sheet, bi-fold, or tri-fold layout.

Preparation

Familiarize yourself with the word processing ability of ClarisWorks, review the reference material in your readings packet entitled "Desktop Publishing with ClarisWorks", and look over the job aids on scanning images.

Activity

Use ClarisWorks word processing to create a series of articles for your newsletter. The articles should accurately represent content related to your semester project and be appropriate to the ability level of your readers. Save the file.

Create a second word-processing document, then copy and paste the articles from the old document into the new document placing the information in "floating text fields". Create headlines for the separate articles and a banner for the top of the page.

Locate clip art graphics or enter scanned images that accentuate the text. You may want to try the text wrap feature to have the text surround the graphics. Boxes can be used to help the reader focus on critical information.

Your newsletter should be approximately one page in length for each person in your group. It may be printed on one or both sides of the page.

Evaluation

The document should include more than one text document and at least one graphic or scanned image. Include columns, headlines, and page banner. The document should be easy to read, informative, and esthetically pleasing. Both vertical and horizontal alignments should be checked. Make sure the document is appropriate to the audience and content area. View the newsletter rubric or additional information on the grading of this project.
