I. Eligibility

All students participating must be in a K-12 school, including home school, and have a teacher or equivalent adult overseeing participation. Any questions, concerns, or comments regarding this policy can be directed to Dan McDowell at dmcdowel@grossmont.k12.ca.us

II. Procedures

Response Period - During this part of the game, usually 2-3 weeks, the questions and resources are available for students to answer. All answers must be submitted before the end of the Response period.
  1. Questions for for game are posted.

  2. Using provided specific and general resources, students research events regarding question topics. Please note that students are not limited to provided resources. It is recommended that teachers print out questions for easy reference.

  3. Students make educated guesses for each multiple choice question. It is up to the teacher to determine how to make students accountable for their answers. See the teacher's guide for suggestions.

  4. Team leaders or teacher submits answers for each group. Once the form has been submitted, answers cannot be changed. This is done using the Final Submission Form which is linked from the main EG page.

Follow Up Period - This part is optional. It provides an opportunity for students to follow the topics presented in the questions.

  1. Students keep track of current events.

  2. Once a question has been answered in the news, the team must use the Answered Question Form which is linked to the main EG page. The correct answer, team name, password, and a link to an Internet resource confirming the answer must be included in this form.

III. Scoring and Winning

The team with the most points at the end of the game will be declared the winner. Unfortunately, we cannot afford a grand prize as of yet (we are working on it however) so the winning team only really gets bragging rights and a photo of the team posted and/or a link back to the school of the winner.

Points

  1. Game Points - Each correct answer is worth 5 points. As questions are answered in the news, an ongoing tally will be posted and linked to the main EG page.

  2. Follow Up Points - Additional points can be earned by teams who keep track of the question events. When a question is answered from the Follow Up Period, the first team to submit the Answered Question Form will receive 5 points, the second team will receive 3 points, the third team will receive 1 point. The form must be complete with the correct answer, team name, password, and a a link to an Internet resources confirming the answer.

At the end of the game, points will be tallied, posted, and linked to the main EG page within one week of the end of the game.

IV. Specific Rules

The rules are simple. There are ten questions in each category that need to be answered during the response period of the game. Once the Response Period has ended the teams are encouraged to participate in the Follow Up Period. To win the game all categories must be entered.

Here are some specific rules to cover any technicalities that occur:

  1. If a question is answered during the response period, it will become disqualified even if teams have already submitted their answers.

  2. If two (or more) answers turn out to be correct in the time frame, all will receive full points.

  3. You may only pick one answer per question.

  4. The selections listed under each question are the only ones that will qualify you for a correct answer. You must pick the answer that is the closest to your prediction.

  5. The Educated Guess judge will have final say regarding correct or incorrect answers.

V. Using the Resources

Each category has its own set of links to help with your predictions. Some of these links will bring you directly to the location of information that will aid you. Other links are home pages for organizations, government agencies, magazines, and newspapers. When using these resources, you may have to search archives or navigate to the appropriate information. A short description will follow each link to help you best utilize the resources.
